Obsidian is volcanic glass — lava that cooled so fast it never had time to become stone. Iceland, a whole country built on volcanoes, has it, and the Icelandic word for it is hrafntinna: raven-flint. Black, glossy, sharp-edged, and named for the bird that carries Odin's thoughts across the world.
