In Icelandic folklore, the thirteen Jólasveinar come down from the mountains one by one in the nights before Christmas — sons of the troll-woman Grýla, and every one of them is a thief with a specialty. Þvörusleikir licks the wooden spoons. Pottaskefill scrapes the pots. Askasleikir hides under the bed waiting for someone to set down a bowl. Bjúgnakrækir steals the sausages from the rafters. They are not here for your presents. They are here for your kitchen.

These are later Icelandic tales, not Viking Age myth, but they grew out of the same long northern winters and the same hard truth: the best-smelling room in the house is always the one under siege.
