Samhain is the night the boundary between the living and the dead becomes something you can almost reach through — the end of the harvest, the beginning of the dark half of the year, the moment when the Norse and Celtic traditions both agreed that something significant was happening and it deserved acknowledgment. Fire. Offering. The careful navigation of a night when the world is more permeable than usual.

And somehow, across all of that solemnity, somebody always brings candy corn.
